급식체 is a kind of Korean slang that some teenagers and people in their early twenties use in text message and/or on social media. It's called 급식체 because reportedly, it is mainly used by people who eat 급식 (school food) at their school cafeteria. The word 급식 is not used, however, to refer to food that college students eat at the college cafeteria. In this video lesson, you can learn about some common examples of 급식체 but just like with any temporary fad, we don't recommend that you actually use it.

📕 📗
"Hanja(한자, 漢字)" refers to Chinese characters that are used in Korean, and even if you don't actually know how to read and write the Hanja characters themselves, knowing Hanja-based words will exponentially increase your Korean vocabulary, since many Korean words are based on these Chinese characters.

Over the past few years, we have received many questions like these and here are our answers.

Q: Do Korean people really know thousands of Hanja?
A: Many of them do! And most people can at least read and understand hundreds of Chinese characters but they may not be able to write everything from memory.

Q: Will knowing these Hanja characters actually help with my Korean vocabulary?
A: Definitely! Learning Hanja can be compared to learning Latin and Greek word roots when learning English, but much easier and much more applicable to everyday usages.

Q: So, even if I don't actually memorize Hanja characters, studying Hanja can still help me improve my Korean?
A: Yes! Studying Hanja will help you develop a sense of understanding and even guessing the meaning of new words you encounter for the first time!

How often do you listen to something in Korean and repeat it out loud? It is a very good way to practice speaking and to get yourself ready for your next real-life Korean-speaking situation. We know that a lot of our students like to listen to audio material while they are on the go, and we just finished working on our first “Listen & Repeat” course, based on our popular book, The Korean Verbs Guide.

Get the audio course here:
https://mykoreanstore.com/products/listenrepeat-verbs

How to use the audio course:
(It’s very simple. Just listen and repeat!)
Listen to each track and repeat everything out loud. You will be given a pause for each word and phrase. After hearing the English portion for each phrase, try saying the Korean translation before you hear the correct pronunciation by a native speaker. We recommend that you listen to everything at least twice over, so that you can say everything as comfortably and confidently as possible.

We are extremely grateful for all the love and support we have received over the years. When we first started the site, our only focus was to just help people learn Korean; we didn’t have any products to sell or advertise. And as we started publishing more and more lessons, many people wanted to help us through donations. So instead of just taking donations, we decided to also offer some perks.

But we’ve now reached a point where we are creating enough revenue through the sales of our various products and services that it doesn’t “feel right” to receive donations on top of making profits. Hence this video.

Thank you very much everyone who has supported us through donations over the years, and also through spreading the word about what we do. You are truly awesome.

We will continue working hard! 정말 감사합니다!

In today’s episode of Trending Topics In Korea, we talk in detail about what 꼰대(ggondae) is and a recent incident that occurred involving a certain Korean politician. The term 꼰대 generally refers to someone who is haughty and thinks that they are more important than other people, and they also have a big sense of entitlement. Traditionally, 꼰대 was usually older people, but these days people say that even some young people are like that, making themselves be called 젊은 꼰대 (young ggondae).

GGONDAE SELF-CHECK

You are a GGONDAE if:
- When meeting someone new, checking their age comes first, and using informal language with anyone younger.
- You often tell stories of ”when I was your age…”
- You get offended at lower ranking co-workers who come in later than them.
- You look for the flaws in a lower ranking co-worker who is popular.
- You often talk about ties to high ranking officials, company executives, famous celebrities, etc.
- You are not annoyed by lower-ranking co-workers who don’t give you coffee or cigarettes automatically or don’t grill samgyeopsal at company dinners and eventually make you do things on your own.
- You tell lower ranking co-workers, who do a job in a new way, the “right” way to do the job.
- You tell people to freely express their opinion, but later you find yourself giving your answer first.
- You can call someone out on their clothes and greeting etiquettes, because it’s related to work.
- You can’t understand people who have to miss company outings or picnics because of personal circumstances.
